Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 5.0 mL Blood in a Gold Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 0.5 mL.
Unacceptable conditions: Grossly hemolyzed specimens.
Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: 3 months

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: The serum concentration of prealbumin reflects the synthesis capacity of the liver and is markedly diminished in malnutrition and other conditions. Due to its short half-life of approximately 2 days, prealbumin can be used for monitoring the nutritional status and efficacy of parenteral nutrition.

Reference Interval: 

0-5 months:  7.0 - 30.0 mg/dL
6 months to 1 year: 11.0 - 28.0 mg/dL
2 - 10 years: 12.0 -32.0 mg/dL
11-17 years: 12.0- 35.0 mg/dL
≥ 18 years: 18.0 - 35.0 mg/dL
