Protein, body fluid

Lab Section:

Chemistry

Lab Location:

Main Lab

Test ID:

LAB196

Methodology:

Colorimetric

Schedule:

On request

Reported:

1 hour for STAT orders; 4 hours for Routine orders

Specimen Requirements:

Collection: 1.0 mL Body Fluid in a Sterile Container.
Pediatric volume: 0.5 mL.

Reference Interval:

See Below Table for Fluid Type specific ranges

Peritoneal:

Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient (SAAG) is a more useful measurement of portal hypertension
Patients that meet two out of the following three criteria are unlikely to have spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
Total Protein > 1 g/dL

Glucose < 50 mg/dL
LDH greater than the upper limit of normal for serum
The total protein concentration may help differentiate uncomplicated ascitesdue to cirrhosis from cardiac ascites, both of which have a SAAG ≥1.1 g/dL. In the case of cirrhosis, the total protein is <2.5 g/dL whereas in cardiac ascites it is ≥2.5 g/dL

Pleural:

Pleural fluid to serum total protein ratio ≤ 0.5 is consistent with a transudative process
