Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 5.0 mL Blood in a Gold Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1.0 mL.
Unacceptable conditions: Grossly hemolyzed specimens.
Stability: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 6 months (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: Sm antibodies are specific for lupus erythematosus (LE) and occur in relatively 30% of LE patients. The levels of Sm antibodies remain relatively constant over time in patients with LE.

        <20 Units = Negative 
      20-39 Units = Weak Positive 
      40-80 Units = Moderate Positive 
        >80 Units = Strong Positive
