Methodology: 

Cell count methodology either manual chamber count or automated analysis

Schedule: 

Sunday-Saturday

Reported: 

1 hour  for STAT orders; 2 hours for Routine orders

Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 3.0 mL Fluid in a Sterile Container.
Pediatric volume: 1 mL.
Pleural, peritoneal, pericardial or synovial fluid collected in lavender tubes.
Unacceptable conditions: Frozen and clotted samples. Unacceptable for cell counts- abscess,cyst and all surgical drainages, spun hct is performed.
Stability: < 24 hours

 

Notes: 

Reflex Criteria: Joint Fluid reflexs joint crystals;

Abscess,cyst and other surgical drainages- spun hcts reported and stained smears examined for significant findings

Total Nucleated Cells/uL- Synovial fluid- <200 cells/uL
 All other body fluids= <500 cells/uL
