Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 1.0 mL Cerebrospinal Fluid in a CSF Tube.
Pediatric volume: 0.5 mL.
Stability: After separation from cells: Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)



Reflex Criteria: Negative - no further testing is done. Positive or equivocal - Western blot IgG/IgM testing will be performed on the original sample at a reference laboratory

Lyme CSF antibodies are indicated only in patients with documented positive serum Lyme antibodies. If the patient either had a negative serum test, serum testing was not ordered or serum testing results were not available in Epic, the test will be cancelled. If a positive serum test exists please contact the Immunology laboratory to obtain approval for testing.

Clinical Indications: The presence of cerebrospinal fluid antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi can be indicative of neurologic Lyme disease (Lyme neuroborreliosis).

Reference Interval: 

Reference Range for Borrelia burgdorferi Antibodies:
≤ 0.90 LI - Negative
0.91-1.09 LI - Equivocal
≥ 1.10 LI - Positive
