Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 3.0 mL Blood in a Lavender Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1.0 mL.
Unacceptable conditions: Clotted, frozen, QNS, anticoagulants other than EDTA.
Stability: Within 24 hours of collection, stored at room temperature.

 

Notes: 

Reflex Criteria: A first time order reflexs to an MD Interpretation.

Clinical Indications: Smear for presence of Ehrlichia organism in granulocytes or monocytes. A negative result cannot totally rule out the possibility of ehrlichiosis. Confirm negative results with Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test.
