Test ID:

EBV Antibody Panel, Acute Infection

Chemiluminescence Immunoassay

Daily, Sun-Fri

4 hours - 2 days

Specimen Requirements:

Collection: 2.0 mL Blood in a Gold Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1.0 mL.

Clinical Indications: Diagnosis of acute primary EBV infection is confirmed by VCA IgG and IgM positive, and EBNA-1 IgG negative.  If EBNA-1 IgG is positive, acute primary infection is excluded.

VCA-IgM positive only may be early primary infection or a false positive.  False positive EBV VCA IgM can be seen with primary CMV and other acute infections.

Acquisition of EBV begins in childhood and most persons have been infected by age 30. Infection is lifelong and subclinical reactivation is common.

Panel consists of EBV-VCA IgG, EBV-VCA IgM, and EBNA-1 IgG.

Reference Interval:

If all 3 markers are negative, the patient is not immune and is susceptible to a primary EBV infection.
