Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: No minimum volume indicated. Collect CSF in a sterile screw-cap vial.
CSF Tube 4 also acceptable.
Pediatric volume: 0.25.
Transport: CSF specimens must be promptly delivered to the laboratory.

 

Notes: 

The main purpose of EBV PCR in CSF is to detect EBV lymphoma. However, EBV persists in lymphocytes for life, and EBV DNA can be detected in CSF without clear clinical significance, especially in immunosuppressed patients or other patients with lymphocytic pleocytosis.

EBV DNA can also be detected in CSF in primary EBV infection with encephalitis or meningitis. Primary infection is diagnosed by serology.
