Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 2.7 mL Blood in a Blue Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 2.7 mL.
Patient should not be on heparin or on a thrombin inhibitor.
Tube must be full
Transport: Whole blood may be transported at ambient or refrigerated temperature. Separated plasma, not yet frozen, may be transported at refrigerated temperature, while frozen plasma should be sent on dry ice to prevent thawing in transit.
Unacceptable conditions: Serum; QNS; Overfilled; clotted

 

Notes: 

Reflex Criteria: Abnormal results reflex to MD interpretation.

Clinical Indications: Test for dysfibrinogenemia or hypofibrinogenemia; presence of heparin or thrombin inhibitor will also prolong the test result.

PTT will be run and, if prolonged, will be repeated with added polybrene to rule out presence of heparin. If heparin is present in the sample, the test will be canceled.
