Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 3.0 ml Blood in a Lavender Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1.0 ml.
Performed only if >20% blasts in peripheral blood.
Handling: Blood/Bone Marrow; Ambient: 24 hours.
Unacceptable conditions: Fixed smears
Stability: Sample must be received within 24 hours of collection; testing must be performed within 48 hours of collection.

 

Notes: 

Reflex Criteria: All new acute leukemias reflex to an MD interpretation. Special Stains are added at the discretion of the CP/AP attending.

Clinical Indications: For characterization of blast lineage in acute leukemia.
