Lab Section:

Chemistry

Lab Location:

Main Lab

Test ID:

LAB393

Methodology:

Enzyme Immunoassay

Schedule:

On request

Reported:

1 hour for STAT orders; 4 hours for Routine orders

Specimen Requirements:

Collection: 2.0 mL Urine in a Yellow Top Tube - Urine
Pediatric volume: 1.0 mL Urine.

Notes:

Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate analgesic similar to morphine. Fentanyl is 50-100 times more potent than morphine.

It is prescribed mainly for patients with chronic pain and is generally used to manage pain after surgery. Fentanyl is

prescribed as intravenous anesthetic, transdermal patch, and transmucosal lozenge. Half-life of Fentanyl is 3-12

hours. Fentanyl is exclusively metabolized by N-dealkylation and hydroxylation. More than 90% of the dose is

eliminated as norfentanyl and hydroxylated metabolites. Less than 7% of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine.

Reference Interval:

Positive Results:

Any sample that gives a change in absorbance (A) value equal to or higher than DRI Fentanyl 2 ng/mL calibrator is interpreted as positive.

Negative Results:

Any sample that gives a change in abdorbance (A) value less than DRI Fentanyl 2 ng/mL calibrator isinterpreted as negative. Either the sample does not contain the drug being assayed or drug is present inconcentration below the cutoff level for this assay..
