Lab Location:

Main Lab

Test ID:

Lyme Screen with reflex to confirmation by Western Blot Borrelia Burgdorferi VIsE1/pepC10 IgG/IgM, ELISA

Semi-Quantitative Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay

Sunday, Tuesday-Friday

2-4 days

Specimen Requirements:

Collection: 5.0 mL Blood in a Gold Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 0.5 mL.
Unacceptable conditions: Moderately hemolyzed specimens
Stability: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 6 months (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)

Reflex Criteria: Negative - no further testing is done. Positive or equivocal - Western blot IgG/IgM testing will be performed at an additional cost.

Clinical Indications: The Borrelia VlsE1/pepC10 IgG/IgM Test System is intended for the qualitative detection of IgG and IgM class antibodies to VlsE1 and pepC10 antigens from Borrelia burgdorferi in human serum. The assay is intended for testing serum samples from symptomatic patients or those with a history of Lyme Borreliosis. All positive and equivocal specimens are tested with a second-tier test such as Western Blot, which if positive, is supportive evidence of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Diagnosis of Lyme Borreliosis should be made based on the presence of B. burgdorferi antibodies, history, symptoms, and other laboratory data. Negative first or second tier results should not be used to exclude Borreliosis.

Lyme screening by ELISA is routinely performed Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Western Blot conformation is performed on Monday and Thursday. Stat requests for Lyme ELISA only may be accommodated in cases where the physician is attempting to distinguish Lyme arthritis from septic arthritis in pediatric patients but THE LAB MUST BE CALLED (203-688-5648) in order to obtain this testing. Stat testing is limited to Monday thru Friday until 9:00pm and Saturday and Sunday until 2:00pm.
