Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 3.0 mL Blood in a Lavender Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1.0 mL.
Unacceptable conditions: Clotted, Frozen, Quantity not Sufficient specimens (QNS), no anticoagulant other than EDTA (lavender top tube)
Stability:
Preferred within 4 hours of collection; <24 hours accepted

 

Notes: 

Reflex Criteria: A first time positive result reflexes to an MD interpretation.

Clinical Indications: Both smears and QBC are analyzed for presence of malarial parasite. If parasites are present a parasitemia quantitation is performed, and speciation is done by the binax procedure.

If malaria is present, parasitemia is quantified
