Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 3.0 mL Blood in a Lavender Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1.0 mL.
Unacceptable conditions: Clotted, Frozen, Quantity Not Sufficient specimens (QNS), no anticoagulant other than EDTA (lavender top tube)
Stability:
Preferred within 4 hours of collection; <24 hours accepted.

 

Notes: 

Reflex Criteria: A first time positive result reflexes to an MD interpretation and a Malaria Binax to verify malaria is not present.

Clinical Indications: Both smears and QBC are analyzed for presence of babesia. If parasites are present a parasitemia quantitation is performed.
