Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 5.0 mL Blood in a Gold Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1.0 mL.
Unacceptable conditions: Grossly hemolyzed specimens.
Stability: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 6 months (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: Over 50% of healthy adults have a relatively high background of specific M. pneumoniae IgG antibodies in their sera, most likely due to past M. pneumoniae infections. Therefore, paired sera obtained with a time interval of 1 to 3 weeks are highly recommended in adults to confirm reinfection by M. pneumoniae. Isolated titers of IgG antibody are less useful.
