Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 3.0 mL Blood in a SST.
Pediatric volume: 1 mL.
Red-top tube (no gel); Overnight fasting is required. Allow
blood to fully clot (about 1/2 hour) at room temperature
(20-25 degrees C).

Plasma collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube
Transport: Ship frozen.
Unacceptable conditions: Gross hemolysis • Grossly lipemic • Received room temperature
Stability: Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: 6 months

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: Proinsulin is used to detect and monitor excessive hormone production from insulinomas.
