Specimen Requirements:  Collection: 4.0 mL Blood in a Lavender Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 2 mL.
3 mL plasma from a lavender top tube. Mix well and
centrifuge. Separate plasma into a plastic vial and
freeze immediately. Do not thaw.
Transport: Frozen.
Stability: Ambient: 72 hours; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: 28 days

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: VIP is a neurotransmitter and its excess can cause secretory diarrhea. VIP-secreting tumors are most commonly found in the tail of the pancreas in adults. VIP-producing ganglioneuromas or ganglioneuroblastomas may be found in the adrenal glands in children.
