Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 4.0 mL Blood in a Gold Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 2.0 mL.
Red top tube. Spin and freeze serum within 2 hours of collection.  Patient should avoid food high in indoles: avocado, banana, tomato, plum, walnut, pineapple and eggplant. Patient should also avoid tobacco, tea and coffee three days prior to collection. Collection time required
Transport: Frozen.
Unacceptable conditions: Received room temperature • Received refrigerated
Stability: Frozen: 42 days

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: Serotonin concentrations are greatly increased in patients with carcinoid syndrome. Carcinoid tumors are associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) types I and II. These tumors are associated with flushing, diarrhea, pain, and other symptoms.
