Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: No minimum volume indicated. Collect Blood in a Miscellaneous Container.
Pediatric volume: 1 .

Handling: Let blood dry on the filter paper at ambient temperature in a horizontal position for 3 hours.
Do not expose specimen to heat or direct sunlight. Keep specimen dry. An alternative blood collection option for a patient >1 year of age is fingerstick..
Unacceptable conditions: Specimens other than Blood spots. Blood spot specimen that shows serum rings or has multiple layers is not acceptable.

 

Notes: 

Whatman Protein Saver 903 Paper is preferred. Ahlstrom 226 Filter Paper and the Supplemental Newborn Screening Card (Supply T493) are also acceptable.
