Specimen Requirements:  Collection: 3.0 mL Blood in a Gold Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1 mL.
Also acceptable: Red (clot activator), lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA).
Transport: Refrigerated.
Unacceptable conditions: Specimens containing particulate material
Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: Indefinitely (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)
On Floor Storage: Refrigerated


Clinical Indications: Diagnosis of acute HEV infection in travelers or immunosuppressed patients, especially solid organ transplants.

Consider HEV for acute hepatitis in travelers to endemic areas or in immunosuppressed patients, who are negative for acute HAV, HBV, and HCV.
