Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 4.0 mL blood collected in an EDTA Lavender Top Tube.
Pediatric volume: 1 mL.
Deliver to lab on ice. Patient should avoid food high in indoles: avocado, banana, tomato, plum, walnut, pineapple

e and eggplant. Collection time required
Transport: Frozen.
Handling: Obtain Serotonin Kit from Reference Laboratory at 203-688-2444. Serotonin Kit (provided by Quest Diagnostics Chantilly).

 

Draw one 4 mL lavender-top tube (L) and transfer immediately to a plastic bottle containing 35 mg Ascorbic Acid. Mix well, freeze.


Unacceptable conditions: Received room temperature or refrigerated • Whole blood collected in a (lavender-top) EDTA tube without ascorbic acid.


Stability: Frozen only 42 days

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: Serotonin is produced in excess by carcinoid tumors of the enterochromaffin cell usually in the small intestine, appendix or rectum.
