Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 3.0 mL Blood in a Red Top Tube
Pediatric volume: 1 mL.
2 mL serum collected in a red-top tube (no gel). Alternative Specimen(s): Plasma collected in: EDTA (lavender-top) tube
Transport: Refrigerated (cold packs).
Unacceptable conditions: Serum Separator Tube (SSTŪ)
Stability: Room temperature: 72 hours Refrigerated: 7 days Frozen: 14 days

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: Quantitates all common barbiturates as a single sum (does not distinguish among specific barbiturates). Thiopental and high levels of acetaminophen may interfere.
