Specimen Requirements: 

Collection: 4.0 mL Blood in a Royal Blue Top - EDTA Whole blood.
Pediatric volume: 2 mL.
Carefully clean skin prior to venipuncture. Avoid worksite

 collection. Avoid hemolysis. Use the royal blue-topped trace metal evacuated tube, which is available with EDTA, heparin.

Separate cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Leave RBCs in the original container and replace stopper. Transport 1 mL RBCs in the original collection tube. (Min: 0.4 mL) 


Transport: Refrigerated (cold packs).
Unacceptable conditions: Received frozen.
Stability: Room temperature: 1 month Refrigerated: 1 month Frozen: Unacceptable

 

Notes: 

Clinical Indications: Selenium is a key component of a number of functional selenoproteins required for normal health. The best know of these are the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase enzymes. Selenium plays an important role in the control of thyroid hormone metabolism and is important for proper reproductive performance.
